Choosing the right appliance for each purpose. These are among the most important decisions you’ll make, when planning your kitchen. That’s because you’re using your appliances every day, so a poor choice will be a source of frustration to you day after day after day!

Make a list of your expectations for each appliance: price range, ‘image,’ reliability, performance, etc. Here are some suggestions:

Dishwasher

  • Load size
  • water temperature options
  • cycle duration
  • water volume
  • no. of spray arms
  • location of cutlery tray

Cooktop

  • Gas vs electric
  • Induction vs ceramic
  • Ease of cleaning (spill rim?)
  • Price range

Oven

  • Self-clean
  • Dimensions
  • Double vs upper/lower.

Rangehood

  • Bright light
  • Adequate ventilation (exterior vs filtered)
  • Clearance height
  • Ease of cleaning

Refrigerator/Freezer

  • Plumbing (water dispenser?
  • Ice maker?
  • No. of doors
  • Size and location in the kitchen
  • Hidden (i.e., behind a cabinet door) or visible

Microwave/convection oven

  • Ease of programming
  • Adjustable power settings
  • Location, size, etc
  • Finish (match to other appliances?)
